Expressive Therapy Program
AT WOODRIDGE HOSPITAL
Expressive therapy at Woodridge Hospital uses art, music, movement, creative writing and nature as a part of the patient’s treatment plan.
Some plans may include meditation, yoga, using the Healing Garden and greenhouse to educate on the healing qualities of gardening and aromatherapy (patients smelling the herbs in the healing garden, creating lotions from essential oils, etc.).
Expressive therapy helps adult and pediatric patients – from young children to seniors – to develop coping skills and learn new ways to express their emotions more productively to alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety.
These tools teach patients skills they can continue to use to further their treatment even after their time at Woodridge.
Who can expressive therapy help?
It can be effective for patients with the following issues:
- Addictions
- Anxiety
- Attention-deficit hyperactivity
- Chronic medical illnesses
- Depression
- Developmental disabilities
- Eating disorders
- High levels of stress
- Post-traumatic stress (PTSD)
- Social challenges
All patients are able to participate in expressive therapy activities that are individualized to meet their needs, and our expert therapists then help participants verbalize their experience to reinforce the lesson learned.
It is a key part of a holistic treatment approach that provides effective, compassionate care.
