Hepatology

Overview

Hepatology is primarily the study and treatment of liver disease and includes the gallbladder, pancreas and biliary tree. It grew out of gastroenterology but has begun to emerge as its own medical specialty. Diseases and complications related to viral hepatitis and alcohol are the main reason people need hepatology care. Symptoms of liver diseases include weakness and fatigue, weight loss, nausea, vomiting, and yellow discoloration of the skin (jaundice).
