Lonesome Pine Hospital celebrates 50 years of serving Wise County
In August 2023, Ballad Health marked a significant milestone by commemorating 50 years of Lonesome Pine Hospital's dedicated service alongside the community and team members. In addition to the celebration, Lonesome Pine is set to undergo renovations aimed at expanding its capacity to serve and support the residents of Wise County. This investment reflects Ballad Health's commitment to sustainable healthcare at Lonesome Pine and encompasses enhancements to the emergency department, the expansion of a wellness center, and more.
The community of Big Stone Gap, VA relies on us for the best in emergency and inpatient care. We have 71 beds, including 60 inpatient beds and 11 emergency department beds.
Our outpatient services include radiology, physical therapy and surgical services.
We also provide the most high-tech cancer care through the Southwest Virginia Cancer Center.

Big Stone Gap residency program
Our family practice residency program at Lonesome Pine allows residents to work alongside expert physicians who are skilled in traditional family practice and hospitalist services. This program is affiliated with Lincoln Memorial University's DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine.
