The expanded cardiac services for both inpatients and outpatients include non-surgical cardiac procedures such as diagnostic heart catheterization, pacemaker placement and electrophysiology studies. Private holding rooms offer patient comfort and convenience.
For heart attack patients, cardiac services include percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) which is a procedure that opens blocked arteries and restores blood flow to the heart – a treatment that minimizes damage to the heart and can make the difference in life and death.
The Chest Pain Center offers rapid assessment, monitoring and treatment of chest pain patients. Johnson Memorial is the only Southwest Virginia hospital offering 24/7 interventional cardiology services which include performing an interventional cath procedure during a heart attack to prevent further heart damage. At Johnston Memorial Hospital, the Chest Pain Center admits patients with complaints of chest pain to observation beds. The average length of stay in this area is 18 hours. The staff conducts tests such as serial troponin and EKGs to rule out cardiac events; in most cases, patients are then scheduled for an inpatient or outpatient stress test. Patients with abnormal test results can now receive heart catheterizations in the JMH Cath Lab.
